Topping the list was power generator NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE:NRG - news), rated ``Baa3'' by Moody's Investors Service and ``BBB-minus'' by Standard & Poor's.

``Could there be a worse environment in which to be pursuing a business model that requires huge amounts of capital, lenient lenders, and indulgent rating agencies?'' wrote Carol Levenson, Gimme Credit's research director. ``This merchant power company, like many in Enron Corp.'s peer group, also has a 'balance sheet enhancement plan,' but it might be a tad late.''

Last month, the company reported 2001 earnings that fell short of Wall Street expectations and announced plans to sell as much as $400 million of assets to shore up its balance sheet. It also expects to cut its 2002 capital expenditure by $1.1 billion.

Brunetti said Xcel Energy's plans for NRG in 2002 include:

Infusing $600 million of equity into NRG
Selling approximately $1.9 billion of existing, largely international, generating assets
Canceling approximately $700 million of planned projects and deferring about $900 million of projects
Selling unassigned turbines, and
Reducing business development and A&G expenses by about $45 million.
These actions are expected to reduce 2002 cash requirements by about $3 billion, Brunetti said. He noted that the company expects to capture other benefits, not included in the current projections, resulting from:

Consolidating trading and marketing organizations while honoring all regulatory requirements
Integrating power plant management across the Xcel Energy system, and
Capturing infrastructure savings, where appropriate, to maximize available synergies
XEL tahab NRG üldse börsilt ära kutsuda. Pakkudes mingit jubeda kursiga aktsiavahetust.

Vend MATROX! Professionaalselt yeldud!

you missed my point, brother. whatever...

NRG Energy Inc., following months of financial triage, offered to surrender full ownership of the company to creditors through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, according to people familiar with the matter.
Former NRG executives file Chapter 11 petition

Five former executives of NRG Energy are attempting to push the troubled US energy group into bankruptcy, raising the possibility that it will not have time to negotiate an orderly restructuring of its debt.

The executives, who include Dave Peterson, the former chief executive officer, filed an involuntary Chapter 11 petition against the company late on Friday at the US Bankruptcy Court in Minnesota. They claim to be owed about $23.5m in pension payments, deferred compensation and severance payments.

NRG is one of a number of US power generators experiencing liquidity problems in the wake of Enron's collapse last year and has been described for several months by analysts as "the next overnight bankruptcy".

The company said on Monday it had 20 days to respond to the petition and would continue to trade as normal until then. It stressed that none of its bank lenders or bondholders had joined the former executives in signing the petition and that there were no restrictions yet on its debtors.

"NRG is currently considering its options. In the meantime, NRG's employees will receive their wages, salaries and benefits as usual, and NRG will continue to purchase goods and services and pay for all purchases on normal business terms," it added.

NRG has been in default on some of its loans since earlier this month and has been trying to restructure about $10bn of debt as well as raising $1.3bn in cash from international asset disposals. It said negotiations would continue in the hope of finding a solution.

The other executives listed in the court filing are Leonard Bluhm, former chief financial officer, John Noer, former senior vice president, Brian Bird, former treasurer, and Craig Mataczynski, former president of NRG's North American operations. All of the men left NRG in June when it was bought back by Xcel Energy, from which it was spun-off two years ago.

Lenders and analysts have put intense pressure on the US power sector following Enron's collapse and the Californian power crisis last year. Companies suffering from credit downgrades and liquidity problems include Dynegy, El Paso, Mirant and CentrePoint Energy, formerly Reliant Energy.
