Cracking down on crime while cracking down on CO2 emissions is the catch phrase used by Mitsubishi regarding the use of the i MiEV by police forces across the UK
A new type of redox flow battery presents a huge advantage for electric cars. If the rechargeable batteries are low, the discharged electrolyte fluid can simply be exchanged at the gas station for recharged fluid -- as easy as refilling the petrol tank.

Truck Manufacturers Going Electric!
Big-rig makers are eager to jump on the plug-in bandwagon, joining automakers in the scramble to take advantage of government incentives for vehicles that run on batteries.
Manufacturers are also bringing out diesel hybrids for longer hauls of 100 miles or so, with Kenworth, Mack, Navistar and Peterbilt targeting large nationwide, regional and private fleets.

Konkreetsed näited:
1. Next year, Navistar (NYSE:NAV), with the aid of a $39-million federal stimulus grant, will build 400 midsize trucks powered by batteries and intended for the urban parcel and product delivery market.
2. Smith Electric Vehicles U.S. (www.smithelectricvehicles.com) and Altec Industries (www.altec.com) jointly are producing electric utility-type trucks with aerial ladders for Pacific Gas and Electric.
3. Balqon Corp. (OTC:BLQN) is set to make medium-size battery-powered trucks at its Harbor City, Calif., plant that can haul seven tons of cargo and go 90 miles or so on a single charge.

Tesla Files IPO Paperwork, Plans To Go Public
Tesla Motors filed paperwork Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering hoping to raise as much as $100 million. Oh, good, because they lost $31.5 million in the first nine months of 2009. So we guess given the current burn rate, that'll last them two years or so. Again, good luck with that.

Batteries: They Make Electric vehicles Go ... But It’s Not as Simple as It Seems
Lühike kuid hea kokkuvõte elektriautode akude teemal!
Former governor of New York George Pataki visited the Washington Auto Show today and set an ambitious target during the morning's opening plenary session. How ambitious? Um, he called for electric vehicles (EVs) to grow to 40 percent of the new vehicle market by 2020. Yes, 40 percent. In ten years. In other words, way, way higher than anyone else is seriously suggesting will happen.

2010. For plug-in vehicles advocates, this is the year of many, many promises. As of today, there are only around 3,000 highway-capable electric vehicles from major automakers on U.S. roads. By this time 12 months from now, there should be many thousands more. Someday, we're pretty sure, plug-in cars will be as common as after-Christmas sales on December 27th, but for now we've culled a list of the cars that automakers have either announced will be making their market debut in 2010 somewhere in the world or, in some cases, will take a big step towards production status this year.

Huvitav areng:
March 1 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. stopped work on the Cadillac Converj, an electric-drive coupe similar to the Chevrolet Volt, to focus on cheaper plug-in hybrids for its luxury brand, two executives with knowledge of the move said.
...
“The future lies in plug-in hybrids with smaller electric range,” said Eric Noble, president of CarLab, an Orange, California-based automotive consultant. Dropping the Converj is “a tacit admission from GM that they over-batteried the Volt.”
...
Like the Volt, the coming generation of plug-in hybrids from GM and other automakers will be able to replenish their batteries at household outlets. Their range on electricity will be about 10 miles, topping the 1 mile of current hybrids such as Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius that capture power from braking.

Reports predicting low EV sales volumes often use $1000 per kwh as the price for lithium-ion batteries, but that is unrealisticly high and should no longer be used.
A new report issued by Deutsche Bank indicates prices that are considerably lower. They write “we continue to believe that the market underestimates the potential for growth in this segment” and “we’ve noted evidence of steeper than-expected battery price declines which will likely bolster the consumer value proposition and potentially lead to stronger demand than we originally envisioned.”
The firm notes the average lithium-ion cell price in 2009 has been $650 per kwh, but claims automakers are already seeing bids for $450 per kwh from battery companies for delivery contracts in the 2011/2012 timeframe.
Furthermore, they predict an additional 25% decline in price over the next 5 years and a 50% decline over the next 10 years along with a doubling of performance over the next 7 years.
Previously LG Chem subsidiary Compact Power’s CEO Prabahkar Patil told GM-Volt he expected cell cost to drop up to four-fold in the next 10 years, and said lithium ion cells for non automotive applications is already $350 per kwh.
Furthermore, last March GM vice president Jon Lauckner stated GM is already paying “many hundreds of dollars per kWh,” less than $1000 for the Volt’s lithium ion cells.
If one considers the Volt has a 16 kwh lithium ion battery, at $450 per kwh its total cell cost would be $7200.
Fuel costs about 2 cents per mile using electricity, and about 10 cents per mile using gas. At $450 per kwh at today’s gas prices, after 90,000 miles of electric driving fuel savings will cover the added cost of the battery.
