Early indications are that the market will open strongly as investors celebrate a complicated government plan to save Citigroup (C) . While being in a situation where the federal government has to step in to rescue one of our largest financial institutions is certainly not a positive, the market was worried that the situation might become even worse.
There is plenty of economic news out there this morning, the most notable of which is some sort of huge stimulus bill of $500 billion or more. We still have the automakers looking for help, and the homebuilders are starting to make some overtures for assistance.
I don't need to go into all the details as to all the government action that is being considered and is under way. It suffices to say it is of a magnitude we have not seen before and is going to grow and evolve tremendously over the next several months as the Obama administration takes control and makes plans.
What we need to focus on is whether this action is going to produce a meaningful turn in the market. Is the saving of Citi and talk about stimulus plans going to draw investors back into the market and help us begin a new uptrend?
That certainly would be nice. We certainly are technically "oversold" sufficiently to produce a bounce, and the mood is terribly negative, so that suggests we could see a bit more of a bounce. We also have the typically positive trading emotions of the Thanksgiving holiday to bolster things.
So it is not a bad setup for the bulls to run a bit, but the biggest problem for investors is that the market volatility is just way too high to invite confident and systematic buying. Anyone who has been paying attention for the last few months is painfully aware that this market can easily move 5% or more in an hour on a news headline -- or on nothing at all.
The market has become little more than a casino lately, with intraday trading being the only sensible approach to playing the market. A gap open on Monday morning like we are seeing today plays right into the short-term trading mentality and will likely invite some quick selling.
So even with the celebration of the bailout news this morning, there still is nothing to indicate that the market is close to undergoing any major change in character. We are oversold and that may support a further bounce, but the big picture is still of a very ugly downtrend; individual stocks offer very little in the way of inviting entry points.
It would be nice if volatility slowed a bit and the bulls could get some sort of decent bounce going, but the emotions and news flow don't seem very supportive of a calm market. There is just too much drama at present, and that means you either daytrade or you protect your cash and stand aside.

Goldman Sachs langetas täna oma kasumiootusi S&P500 indeksile. Nimelt 2008. aasta numbriks oodatakse $55 ning 2009. aasta omaks $53. Suurtest majadest peaks see olema küll selgelt kõige negatiivsem ootus. Kui see 2009. aasta number on õige, kaupleksid aktsiaturud täna S&P500 indeksil 800 punkti peal 15-kordsel kasumil.
