"There is only one side of the market, and it is not the bull side or the bear side but the right side."
-- Jesse Livermore
On Wednesday the DJIA closed below the closing low in August, causing Dow Theory to trigger a sell signal. Some say that this century-old theory is no longer valid, but many pundits are using it to now declare that we are already in a bear market.
There is no universally accepted definition of a bear market. Some say it's a correction of 20%; others say it depends on the primary trend of prices and the level of sentiment. Many individual investors consider a decline in their portfolios of more than 10% that lasts for longer than an hour to be a full-fledged market crash.
The media likes the bear and bull market designations because it makes for easy and dramatic headlines. Unfortunately, such declarations do little to help us make money. Just because we happen to be in a bear market doesn't mean we can't make money. On the contrary, some of the best tradeable bounces will occur during a bear market.
We certainly need to recognize that this market is acting extremely poorly, but we need to be leery about embracing convenient labels that will blind us to good opportunities that are sure to develop. The intensely negative mood is the sort of thing that almost always leads to at least a temporary respite, and we need to be ready to take advantage when that occurs.
We have a positive start this morning to our abbreviated trading season (don't forget that we close at 1 p.m. EST today), but there is little news, and the trading is very thin. Traders have been hoping for some positive holiday action and have gotten little so far. They may try again today, but so many folks are feeling trapped in this poor market that they are quick to sell into strength and keeping the positive action short-lived.
Overseas markets have a better tone this morning, and that is helping. However, the strength is just a bit of a bounce covering up the fact that the action on Wednesday night and Thursday morning was extremely poor overseas. Be careful.

The whole world is shopping."
"Everyone in NY is shopping."
The above quotes were overheard at Saks (SKS) this afternoon (I had to go after work today to pick something up.) The place was a mob scene and Rockefeller Center area was generally teeming with people.
The gal at the register assured me SKS had been so busy all day (they had an early morning sale that attracted a lot of folks) and that people were NOT just looking, but buying too, and a lot of the buyers were foreigners (no shock there, given the dollar's tumble and the locale).
Hamilton Place'i ostukeskuse ülisuur parkimisplats Tennsylvanias Chattanooga nimelises linnas oli kell 9 hommikul igaljuhul küll kenasti täis. Vähemasti ostjaid on teatud kohtadesse korralikult jagunenud (ootused tarbija ostuvõimes on viimasel ajal tublisti alla tulnud, mistõttu võib see positiivse üllatuse valmistada).
Laiahaardelisemate ülevaadeteni pole veel jõudnud.

homo sapiens on ikka täis vammainen.
Prahas pidavat saama SMS-i teel ühiskondliku transpordi piletit osta:
Texting to travel in Prague
jne.
