Don't Forget -- the Big Picture Is Terrible

As I grow older, I pay less attention to what people say. I just watch what they do.

The market action this morning isn't quite as bad as it was last night after Intel (INTC) issued an earnings warning, but market players aren't exactly rushing to do some major buying. Wal-Mart (WMT) issued a mixed report and took down forward guidance a bit, but mainly investors are just catching their breath this morning and aren't feeling quite as grim and glum as they did yesterday when the market added to a very ugly day in late trading on the Intel warning.
The bad news is that even a little better tone this morning doesn't do a whole lot to change the very ugly market picture. We are on the verge of breaking below the October lows in many of the key sectors and indices, if we haven't done so already. Financials and the Nasdaq are already in new low territory, and the S&P 500 and DJIA are very close.
We are a little oversold, which suggests some sort of bounce here, but those October technical levels are beckoning and it is going to be very difficult for this market to not take them out. Perhaps that will give us a better "purge" and help give us some sort of low to slowly build from, but the key thing for us is to respect the fact that the downtrend and/or bottoming process is still taking place and will require some time.
The big-picture situation remains one of the most troubling we've ever had. The housing problem is still a mess, the TARP rescue plan has changed completely and is in great disarray, the economy is obviously getting worse, the presidential transition has to play out over a couple of months before we have better clarity, and most important, the technical picture stinks and there are no good stock charts for us to buy.
So we end up with some minor bounces here and there that get folks excited because it has been absolutely terrible lately and they want to do something. So they rush in and lose their money again. We do have some very short-term trading and shorting that is possible, but as far as substantial longer-term positions, we can just forget about if for now.
Stay tough and don't let this market wear you down. Eventually things will improve, but for now we just need to keep capital safe and be entertained by the crazy, untradeable action and not worry about participating in it.

S&P500 indeks on nüüd kolmas kord jõudmas 850 punkti piirimaile. Teistkordsel testimisel järgnes kiire ralli, vaatame, kas seekord jätkub investoritel julgust veereva buldooseri ette seista või mitte.
Täna tundub tulevat kõva võitlus pullide ja karude vahel, kes peale jääb ?

see näeb küll äärmiselt õiglase kohtupidamise moodi välja.

S&P500 indeksi tootlused kolmapäeviti (eilsele verelaskmisele siis jätkuks) alates 10. septembrist: -4.71%, -0.20%, -0.32%, -1.13%, -9.03%, -6.10%, -1.11%, -5.27% and -5.19%. Seega kaks kuud pole kolmapäeval rohelust nähtud.
Läheb vist sööstlaskumiseks? Kunagi oli koolipõlves mu iidol sööstlaskumises eesti mees Aare Tamme - kiirused olid 200 km/h ringis. Seda oli mõnus vaadata telekast. Täna vaatame sööstlaskumist ilma suuskadeta?
Sorose poolt kenasti olukord majanduses kokku võetud -> "a deep recession is now inevitable and the possibility of a depression cannot be ruled out."

Ja Capital Economics lubab esmapilgul lausa utoopiana tunduvaid naftahindu. Ei tea, kas saab veel rohkem IEA prognoosidega vastuollu minna?
Oil prices have fallen to within a whisker of our target of $50 per barrel (for Brent), which we had expected to see in the first quarter of next year. For now we are leaving our forecast for average oil prices in 2009 and 2010 at $50pb. Nonetheless, further declines – perhaps to as low as $30 – are conceivable in the months ahead.

See annab 7%lise dividendimäära ühele maailma mõjukale konglomeraadile...
Joel, kas investorid imestaksid pikalt, kui GE kuu aja pärast teataks, et seoses oodatust halvema makrokeskkonnaga on otsustatud dividendimäära vähendada? Ega vist, arvestades neid lubadusi, visioone, muudatusi, mida GE on investoritele viimase paari aasta jooksul kommunikeerinud, kuid pole ellu viia suutnud.
Ja varasemast SPY 52-nädala põhjast 83.6 peal saigi läbi mindud. Kellel siia stopid on pandud, need pestakse turu poolt kenasti välja.
Turul käimas ikka väga jube action. S&P 500 oktoobri põhjad murti, millest ligi 20 minutit sirgjoonelist kukkumist kõikides sektorites. Hetkel põhjadest kergelt taastutud.
