The harmonious mood of Trump’s transition team at Mar-a-Lago has been shattered by a row between two of his closest confidants, Elon Musk and Boris Epshteyn, a legal adviser. An argument over Trump’s justice nominees, which was audible to dinner guests at the resort in Florida, has exposed antagonism between the newly prominent Trump ally Musk and insiders who have been at the president-elect’s side for years.
Whether sharing a McDonald’s meal on Trump Force One, enjoying an Ultimate Fighting Championship bout or joining phone calls to world leaders, Musk has suddenly become a constant presence in Trump’s orbit. However, he only declared his support for Trump in July. Loyal insiders seem increasingly annoyed and suspicious.
The SpaceX billionaire is already reaping benefits. Brendan Carr, Trump’s nominee to lead the FCC, has repeatedly advocated for Musk, including opposing the commission’s rejection of an application by his Starlink company for $855 million in rural broadband subsidies.
Musk has been handed a wide-ranging role at DOGE to scale back or even terminate agencies that oversee his interests, like the NHTSA, which is investigating tech used in Tesla's driverless cars. There's also concern among insiders that Musk wants to steer Trump away from some campaign promises, such as imposing universal US tariffs, to benefit his companies, which rely on imports, and fears over how Musk’s global business ambitions will align with American foreign policy. He took part in a private meeting with Iran’s ambassador to the UN last week at Iran’s request. Trump transition team would not comment.
Growing discontent in Trump’s camp about Musk’s sudden rise to “first buddy”, as he refers to his role, burst into the open during a “heated discussion” including a “massive blow-up” at a dinner table in front of guests last Wednesday, shortly after Trump announced the choice of Matt Gaetz for attorney-general and William McGinley for White House counsel. Both were advocated for by Epshteyn.
Musk was reported to have accused the lawyer, who previously co-ordinated defence in Trump’s criminal cases, of leaking details of the transition to the media. Epshteyn hit back by telling Musk he did not know what he was talking about.
Steve Bannon wrote that “Boris [Epshteyn] v Leon [an anagram of Elon used in mockery] = Alien v Predator” and, referring to Epshteyn, added: “Legal Strategy Brilliant; AG/DoJ Picks Brilliant; Wartime Consigliere.” Bannon’s scepticism runs deep, last year he told his War Room podcast: “Anybody that’s out there fanboying for Elon Musk you’re a fool, you’re a fool, you’re a fool. You think you trust this guy. If you trust him, you’re a fool.”
Trump jokingly referred to Musk’s growing influence by saying: “Elon won’t go home, I can’t get rid of him. Until I don’t like him.” In another sign that the world’s richest man is not getting things all his own way, Trump has asked to meet with another two candidates for the post of Treasury secretary this week before making his decision. -the times
