Get Stronger for 2009

That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
-- Friedrich Nietzsche
2008 is likely to be the most difficult year most of us will ever experience in the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average will finish with losses of around 35% for the year, which is the worst since the Great Depression and has been exceeded just twice before.
Around $30 trillion in total stock market capital has been wiped out, and that doesn't even begin to count the losses in other asset classes, such as real estate, debt and commodities. There were no safe havens during 2008. Even money market funds that broke the buck and nonexistent interest rates made cash a concern at times.
Worst of all during 2008 is that confidence in our economic system has been shaken. Our governmental and business leaders did not see this coming, and they have lurched about, seeking solutions. We have now have fallen into some grand socialist experiment in which we are providing trillions in bailouts and "incentives" and ignoring the great cost we will have to pay down the road.
The good news is that we have survived this, and as long as we stay tough and resolute, we have the capacity to prosper in the year ahead.
The great thing about the stock market is that you always have the chance to start fresh. As long as you have capital, you can forget the past and begin anew at any time. It is an extremely powerful advantage, and if we have the right mindset, the difficulties of 2008 are really nothing more than a form of education that will aid us in the year ahead.
Is 2009 going to be a better year? I sure hope so, but there is no doubt it will be quite challenging. What I do know is that if we work hard at it every day, protect our capital, aggressively seek opportunities when the time is right and stay grounded emotionally, we will prosper. Even the worst market will provide us with opportunities. As Winston Churchill said once said, "We shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and the hills. We shall never surrender."
I'm looking forward to doing battle together with you in 2009, and I wish you the happiest and most prosperous year ever.

Optimistlik või mitte, aga S&P500 indeksi 900 punkti sai kenasti täis. Lisaks on väga suurt liikumist tegemas nafta hind, mis on tõusnud 13% $44 peale.
